British Mussels
Once regarded as the poor relation of the shellfish family because of their small size and relative abundance, mussels are now very popular and cost effective to buy.
The most common blue or British mussels have sleek, shiny shells and tender, nutritious flesh. Like oysters, they are indiscriminate feeders and must be gathered from unpolluted waters. It’s because of this that most mussels sold in fishmongers are farmed. They are available all year round but peak season is October through to March.
Fresh mussels tend to be tightly closed. Allow about 500g per person for a main meal, and half that amount for a starter or for use in pastas or soups.
Mussels are a clean and nutritious source of protein, as well as being a great source of omega 3 fatty acids, zinc and folate, and they exceed the recommended daily intake of selenium, iodine and iron. Mussels are sustainably farmed with no negative impact to the environment.
A versatile shellfish, Mussels can be smoked, boiled, steamed, roasted, barbecued or fried in butter or vegetable oil. Whilst they can be added to pastas, chowders, curries, and so many dishes, one of the most popular ways to enjoy Mussels is Moules Mariniere using cream, garlic and a splash of white wine.
